Decorative Concrete Finishes
All of these solutions are cost efficient alternatives to tiling and or paving. They are all suitable for both internal and external use. You are not limited to just flat surfaces, single colours or just one pattern.
Every project is different, just as every one of our customers is different. We strive to make it personal for you while ensuring that the workmanship and finish is of the highest quality.
Pattern Impressed Concrete
Concrete stamping, Imprinted Concrete or Pattern Impressed Concrete is where we pour new concrete into designs that are pleasing and complementary of your current surroundings. This is a fiber reinforced concrete mix that has high tensile strength so resists cracking more than standard concrete. We then colour the surface and stamp in designs of your choice before the concrete sets.
Concrete Overprinting or Overlay
This is a very strong polymer based cementious product designed to cover an existing concrete slab, If you want to achive a finish that looks identical to an impressed concrete finish, as described above, but already have a concrete base that is structurally sound, this may be the product for you. This product bonds completely with the existing concrete slab and provides a very strong resilient surface. This process will add between 5mm and 15mm to the current slab height. It resists stains, is hard waring and is good for usages such as driveways and pool surrounds where the alternative would be to replace the existing concrete slab. This is a cheaper alternative to a full replacement or refinishing with natural stone or slate.
Stained, dyed and faux finished Concrete
An alternative to overprinting is staining or dying an existing concrete slab. Both acid and acrylic stains are available and can be used to replicate the look of brick, stone, tiles, slate and even wood. As well as replicating the look of impressed or overprinted concrete, staining can create a whole new world of colours and patterns for you, limited only by your imagination. This process adds no more depth to the finished project so is sometimes the only solution if choosing a coloured patterned finish.
Using engraving tools and concrete saws intricate patterns and designs can be cut into the concrete surface. These sections can then be coloured independently often producing interesting works of art. Using stencils we can even cut your company logo into the finished work. This type of finish is not achievable using impressed or overlayed concrete finishes. It is however possible to enhance an imprinted concrete project using stains to produce interesting and sometimes more natural looking effects.
This type of finish is becoming very popular with home owners for internal floor finishes. This finish will last the life of the concrete and is an excellent alternative to tiles, carpets, linoleums and wood. Infact, this finish can be made to look like any of these finishes as well as a whole range of other natural materials. If you want to recreate a masterpiece on the basement floor this is also possible.
If you already have an impressed or overprinted concrete finish but would like to change the colour scheme or maybe you need to repair a section of your existing impressed finish then this can be done quite simply using acrylic based stains.
Polished Concrete
Concrete can also be polished to a mirror finish. This type of finish generally requires no sealing, is stain resistant and hard wearing. A concrete densifier is generally used to fill the capillaries in the concrete during the grinding stage. This creates a very strong, dense surface that produces a finish that will resist liquid penetration. It is not like a sealer that protects the surface but rather penetrates deep into the concrete and chemically changes parts of the concrete that do not add to the structural integrity and reacts with these to become part of the concrete and increase structural integrity. Many hotel's, car show rooms, hospitals and shopping center floors have this type of finish as it operates well in high traffic areas and only requires light mopping. This is now becoming a popular choice of home owners in conjunction with staining products to create beautiful, colourful, highly polished surfaces that require less maintenance than many of the other available finishes.
Very rarely should it be necessary to remove an existing slab. However, the age and condition of the slab will have an impact on whether it requires just cleaning, patching or refinishing with an incredibly strong micro topping before acid or acrylic stains can or should be used.
Re-Sealing & Maintenance
Re-sealing is like re-waxing the family car. Once done the original colours will again be as vibrant as the first day it was done. It can also be used to add more colour to a finished project by mixing a small amount of colour pigment into the sealer or as a way of providing a non-slip surface to existing jobs. Colours can also be changed with stains and dyes but it would require the existing sealer to be completely removed before this can be done. Casting or mixing a silicon sand into the sealer before it dries or is applied will provide an excellent non-slip surface that is perfect for pool surrounds or otherwise slippery areas.
Maintenance is often overlooked by the home owner and over time all sealers will deteriorate, making the finish look dull and aged. We offer a re-sealing service to customers and we would recommend that high traffic areas such as driveways are re-sealed every year. For other areas such as pool decking's every 2 or 3 years should be sufficient.
